Khatchaturian once said, “What is done is done, it is in the past, it can’t be undone.”
…Well… no he didn’t, why would he, he was a Russian composer that made music in the 20th century. Why would he care about words. Or so we think…. He could have liked words; he could have liked puppets. He could have liked puppies on top of cars for all we know and there in lies the problem with ‘Free Speech’. Anything goes.
Inherently free speech is great, it demolishes this whole novel idea of ‘pausing’ ‘thinking’ or ‘keeping your thoughts to yourself’ which unfortunately has been quite ridiculed and shamed in the past decade or so. “If I don’t see you, you don’t exist.” A variation of which is ‘I can hide behind a fake username and say WHATEVER I want.” Keeping up with the momentous rise of social media. Here, anything goes.
Especially now, the barrier between thinking-writing-saying and putting out there is exchangeable, and the cost of it all is your sanity, and mine. Inducing a level of confusion that is unprecedented by society. Withering into chaos and causing more harm than ever before. Diluting morality and the need to wait and seek out the ever so elusive ‘truth’. The barriers between the exploitation of people’s attention and thought processes seems to be the new normal.
I should know better. Im doing it right now. My thoughts are now out there. You may claim it as your own. That is a risk I have to take. Surrendering the ability to think for ourself is a fallacy we all are buying into in exchange for attention. Albeit the wrong type. For the wrong reasons, because… well… anything goes!
