The Real Amazon Anxiety

Brazil is facing criticism for cutting down thousands of trees in the Amazon rainforest to build a road for the COP30 Climate Change Summit.[1]  Ironical. Yes.

When I was younger a fact stating that an area as big as a football field was deforested every 3 minutes in the rain forest was floated around a lot. Which was a scary truth, but did that make us care? NOPE. Plus, at that point there was no way of fact checking this, and now with this miraculous thing called the internet…. There still isn’t. Because is more information really better? 1 ( Refer to my previous blog post on Freedom of Speech)

Clearly that wasn’t completely true, because we still do have some amount of rain forests. Depleted and sparce, sure, but they are still there.

Now, in no way is this invalidating the atrocities that humankind commits against nature, but it is an attempt to ameliorate it.

The fact that Brazil is clearing out chunks of forestland to create a highway to accommodate a climate change summit seems straight up crae crae, and could, for the lack of a better word ‘be planted’ by extremist tree huggers to promote their personal agenda of I don’t know… um…saving the planet. .

Or not… who knows anything anymore?

Am I defending the Brazilian government? HELL NO! Brazil hasn’t produced anything significant since the 90s hit song ‘To Brazil’ by the Vengaboys, who are not Brazilian but should be given credit for making it look like a fun place to be.

The point I am trying to reiterate is that humans are stupid, but not that stupid, and nature’s capacity to heal itself is way greater than any of us can imagine. This may seem like a whimsically positive outlook but might just need to be our last resort.

Here is another example of how amazing nature already is: –

Dust from the Sahara Desert (4800kms away) travels to the Brazilian Rainforest, carried by the winds, and fertilizes it with phosphorus. [2]  This…. Is nothing short of miraculous. And now more that ever we need to believe in this ability of nature to reinvigorate itself. Too much damage has already been done to rewind the clock hence coming at it from angst and anxiety will do no good, for anyone.
